Unhappy Oxygen sensor troubles

alright well a while back i removed my cat and its been running pretty good, both, newish o2 sensors are still in place, but i had some troubles with the wiring harness not being correct so they were cut so the harness would work, had a pro look at it and he made them right... (so i thought), theyve been like this for a while and i dont think there working at all i think the engine has been running on what i thinks is right, so the pcm reset somehow and its blowing black smoke cuz its running rich... long story short im hard wiring the NTK's into the trucks wires, but i have had no luck figuring out which wire on the truck does... NTK site says that Black=Signal to Computer 2xWhites=Heater and Grey= Ground...

So my question is what are the corresponding colors on my truck
ALL HELP IS EXTREMELY APPRECIATED!

P.S. Im working on it now so speedy responses will help ALOT!

this is not very speedy but see if it helps.

when i replaced my front one recently, i ordered the wrong one, square vs round plug or vise versa. i was able to cut the old plug off my old sensor, and splice it into the new sensor, matching wire colors (blk, gry, whites).

do you still have the plug in your wiring harness, or is it gone? please tell me its not gone.

download and save the 01 service manual. it has perfect wiring diagrams in the back.

Thanks for the help, but i found a site that told me which colors were which on the truck, i was digging in the manual for hours on my computer with no luck... maybe i wasnt looking good enough, anyways i got both the O2 sensors wired right and it was chugging and acting really weird, i got the code P0171 which is lean bank 1/2 or something, so i switched the O2 sensors (front to back and vise versa) it seems to be running a bit better but i still got the same trouble code after a bit, but its not running lean cuz its spittin black smoke :/ so I talked to my uncle who has worked at dodge for idk how long and is very knowledgeable about this kinda stuff so I was talkin to him and he said the MAP sensor has the most control over the fuel mixture... Sooooo I'm off to go get a new 80$ MAP sensor later today

P0171 is sensor 1/bank 1 (which is your front O2) is registering a lean condition as reported by your O2.

in response, the pcm will richen the fuel mix up to its max limit. after that, when the O2 continues to report LEAN, then it sets the code, and asks for maintenance.

the black smoke indicates that the pcm and injectors have successfully richened up the mix.

the continued reporting of LEAN is an indication your front O2 is faulty.

edit - you may need a real-time scanner to determine what's going on in the O2 feedback.

alright well that tells me that both my O2 sensors work fine, and so do my injectors... Im off to get the MAP sensor because ive cleaned it out before but i think its time for a replacement, cuz last time i cleaned it the truck ran fine again...
I'll report back later when i get it on the truck and take it for a spin
Thanks for your help!

edit-I know theyre working right because both sensors arent very old and they both have reported a lean condition when they were swapped

i don't think your O2's are working right. the black smoke from the engine which is visible and real - does not jive with the P0171 lean condition from the O2's.

just as a test - clear your codes, remove the O2's and hang them out in fresh air, run the truck in the driveway and see how it reacts. i don't know how long it will take to react. it might take too long. idk.

--caution - the heaters in them get hot.

i don't know, i'm just thinking out loud - if your sensors were previously wired wrong, could they have been damaged in any way?

yeah i talked to my dodge savvy uncle and he said a O2 sensor will prolly work if the MAP didnt, so i returened the MAP and bought a O2 sensor, and i think you may be right about the sensor being broke from it being wired wrong, so im waitin on the truck to cool down to i can change out the front one since the back one doesnt matter a whole lot
