Default Is It In My Head? (Fuel Octane)

ok my truck had suffered some power loss....so i tried putting in some Super fuel (93 Octane) and my power is back plus some....now i know our trucks are tuned with 87 octane so is this all in my head? or do some of you notice quite a difference when filling with super? Now i can chirp the tires without even trying...

Also since i had a power loss and 93 Octane "fixed" that, what could have caused the bogging i was having? clogged line? clogged screen on fuel pump? clogged filter?

Im just trying to get everything good to go for my moose hunt next month...and if i have a power loss up there i could be screwed...because where im going i have to travel 100 miles on dirt roads alone into the woods to get to camp, so if something happens, im screwed...just trying to get all the kinks worked out.

I can't really tell a difference (performance) between 87 and 93 octane in my truck.

when i had a leaking plenum and some light pinging, mine sucked worse than usual, and 93 octane made it run a LOT better. i don't know why but maybe even when mine wasn't audibly pinging, maybe it was pre-detonating ever so slightly.

bogging and then recovery can be a sign of a vac leak.

people will correctly argue that octane is a fancy chemical term for resistance to ping. whether there is more "power" available in 93 is anyone's guess. i don't know. i do know that a long time ago it used to be called Regular and Hi-Test (tested to what, i don't know).

I've tried MPG tests between 87 and 92/93, with no significant differences. However, my son-in-law did some interstate driving in the mid-west recently where an 89 ethanol blend was cheaper than the 87, and in several tanks he did get significantly higher mpg with the 89 in a toyota camry. so i don't know...

the most important thing is you shouldn't go 100 miles deep in the dirt roads by yourself. consider taking a buddy. anything can happen when you least expect it. example - i was gutting a deer a long time ago and a hind leg flipped up and slapped my knife hand and i stuck my knife in my other arm. damn. it was revenge of the deer. after some basic first aid and finishing the deer i had to drive a long ways to get cleaned up from an infection standpoint and stitched up.

I am actually doing this as we speak. With the 87 Octane I had about 12 mpg, city driving. I am on the 89 now and it appears (to early to tell) I will get the same reading. I have noticed the ping almost went away with the 89 when I stand on it. With the 91 there is no ping, have'nt tried the mpg yet with 91. Also, I have not noticed any performance difference between the octanes.

with leaking plenum - the difference i noticed in 87 vs 92+ was when i came to a hill. low octane caused the engine to feel sort of flat, usually ping. higher octane made it feel like it was still pulling and would better hold speed.

mpg tests are challenging. i experience a huge difference in city (13-ish) vs highway fast (15-16) vs highway slow (17). so if i don't exactly match conditions then the test is flawed.

A vehicle that has a knock sensor can gain an edge by switching to 93 octane. The computer will push the timing a bit as the higher octane is more resistant to ping. My wife's Infiniti G35 is supposed to get 93 Octane, but even the dealership tech guys insisted that we could run 87 octane, provided we ran a bottle of techron thru it once every 3 months. They told me that Premium gas has a higher detergent % for the import cars that require it running 4 valve DOHCs. The knock sensor in the Inifiniti will detune the engine for the 87 octane gas, and you loose a bit of perceivable performance. It doesn't switch instantly either, it takes a while for the car to figure out you've switched gas. I think it also looks at long term and short term fuel trims to guesstimate timing as well. It's too bad it doesn't adapt faster, I could go to the track and put some 110 in and have a pretty zippy ride back home.

93 octane will do nothing for you truck except maybe clean the fuel system with repeated use.

If you have a Tuner, the tunes can push the timing advance further forward to take advantage of the higher detonation resistance of 93 octane. The SCT tunes probably have it maxed out. I use to have a superchips and could run the 91 octane tunes on 89 octane gas with no pinging. I've never tried to run one of Hemifever's tunes on anything less than 93 octane.

interesting thread 95ram. I'm curious what difference (if any) it will make in my truck...just for kicks I guess. BTW, be careful while moose hunting. Those are some BIG bastards.

Prolly just some dirt in the line or injectors, my truck seems to run better on 89+ to.

I too feel that my truck gets better MPGs and runs better when running 89 (91,93,95) higher octanes don't really make the *** dyno say there is a difference.

well i went off-roading today, got into a nice sloppy pit, and the front tires were spitting the mud about 15 feet into the air...that NEVER happens and i offroad ALOT...as for the dirt or grim in the injectors, that very well could be, my entire engine bay is light brown lol.....but the front tires whippin up the mud is what really got my spirits up...like i said the front tires never whip up mud, and they were today...and there was a pit that i tried (the one i sunk the truck in and took water into my tranny) and i ripped through it with ease....seems to me that there is better throttle response, or like i said, it might be in my head....

All i know is, im going to run 93 octane from now on...because the difference seems to be quite noticable for me.

Also theres no tuner from hemifever with a 95 OBD1 is there?

Lastly, on my moose hunt im not going alone, my dad is going, and hes bringing his 2004 GMC 2500HD, and his buddy who has a 2002 GMC deisel....so i wont be alone...im taking my truck because the moose hunt starts on a monday, and if we shoot it the first day, well we have the rest of the week to bird hunt, and we'll all go separate ways to get alot of birds lol....

can't wait to have that blood drippin off my tailgate...I love bein a Mainer, (i live in MA now, but lived in ME for 21 years, and am soon moving back)
