Default Multiple Issues

I have a 2000 Ram Sport 5.9 4x4

Issue 1.

Idle jumps around immediately after cold start. If i turn it off and back on it is usually fine but starting to get annoying and getting worse as time goes on. The RPM's will jump from 700-1300 at the most. Maybe a TPS?? The truck also has a P1740 tranny code that i heard sometimes could be cured with tps replacement (already tried replacing soloniod and sensor)

Issue 2.

Over the last few weeks there has been a quite clunking from the front drivers side wheel while going over bumps. I'm thinking it is the upper ball joint because when the truck is jacked up there is some 12-6 play, but not sure if it could be a hub/bearing or anything else.

edit* The clunking has gotten louder and happens more often as time goes on...

Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated!!

The idle is probably the TPS. Either pull it out and clean it or install new. IAC and MAP will mess with the idle as well.

Ball joint is a good start and it could very well be the problem, but if I were you, I'd be checking the U joint first just because it'll be cheaper to fix than the ball joint will be.

Well, i looked at it a bit closer and i def think its the upper ball joint, i can see it moving slightly when my budddy moved the tire 12-6... Looks like i have myself a project for the weekend. Glad their are plenty of DIY ball joint forums on here...

Hoping that the tps sensor fixes at the very least the idle issue, The trans code is a real pain to figure out from what ive read and had multiple stealerships tell me..

A faulty ASD relay will affect idle also. When mine was messing up it would make the rpms jump from 1300ish all the way down to 500 then it would die unless I feathered the gas to keep it running.

Thanks for the reply, never heard of it but my buddy google says thats an auto shutdown relay... Still not sure of what it is though lol. Is there a way to test it?

She's never died on me (knock on wood) rpm's jump around on cold start.

Yep, ASD=automatic shutdown relay. It is tied into a few things that make the truck automatically shut down if there is a problem. If the relay is bad then it will have issues but won't turn on the check engine light.

You can swap your ASD relay for the fog light or horn relay (non-essential) and crank it up to see if it's all good.

If it turns out to be that relay then you just need to run to advance and carry one in there so they can match it up to one of theirs and be on your way.

Replaced the relay with the fog light relay (still in center console from fog light jumper wire project) Its idling fine, i'll have to check in the morning when its good and cold. thank for the advise. If this doesn't do the trick do you think i should go pick up a tps?

i've had surging cold idle twice (500-1500 rpm). both times it was the TPS.
