the way i read that, on 4wd - the bearing is bolted into the back side of the steering knuckle, and a splined axle going through the bearing, and a reusable castle nut.

but on the 2wd, since there is no knuckle, but only a spindle, there's nothing to bolt to in the back, and no splined axle, only a stationary spindle shaft.

the nut is probably a dealer only, or internet for half the price. i think it has no cotter pin. not sure if there's a hole in the shaft for one or not. so for nut security - it has the nylon locker.

not sure, but i think i read it was 1-3/8 (1.375)

with a steering knuckle ?

what year is squirrels wimpy little 2wd truck. ah '01. lets see if he's got enough muscle to get the big nut off. EAT YER WHEATIES BOY !

my daughter had a 97 2wd toyota 4runner, that used the identical steering knuckle and ball joints as a 4wd. instead of an axle passing through, it had a bolt in hub with a slightly different bearing.

Zman you jinxed me last week on cutting grass. my beloved little 8 hp snapper broke a rod and cracked the case. 1 week, UPS man, $450 later i've got a NICE new 11.5 briggs replacement. wow, the power/torque is unbelievable. the governor never even has to kick in to hold rpm. i wish my ****ing truck had that much power. i think i'll go ride around on it some more. haha.

I am partly wrong. They use the same kind of sealed hub assembly, just not with the three bolts on back.

Page 52 in the 2001 service manual will clear up the confusion. The spindle goes through the center of the hub and is held on with a big nut just like the Dana axle.
Instead of the hub being bolted to the steering knuckle with three bolts like the 4x4, the spindle takes the place of the axle shaft on a 2wd and it's what keeps the wheel on.

Nope, pixie dust and rainbows keep the wheel on. Well, that and a 1/8" thick piece of $20 nylon.
