is there a certain build date or model year they started the "Death" Flash?

lolok at your PCM. If it has a sticker that says "Authorized dealer software update" then you have the deathflash. 2001 came with them from the factory.

I'm guessing its the plenum causing the lack of power. I have a 2000 5.2, 4x4 w/5-speed and it still has the death flash. I have no complaints on power or fuel useage. I find it hard to believe that the auto would drag it down compared to the stick. I know my plenum is fine though. I can't wait to get rid of the death flash, then get RR's and headers/muffler! Even right now it tows my 16' boat like its not there. To the OP, seriously do a search on "Plenum Leak".
