Default Time for heater core replacement?

Firstly, I want to thank those that suggested I check out the front U-joints vs. the transfer case. Spent a tiring, but gratifying weekend replacing front axle U-joints, ball joints, rotors, brake pads and a wheel hub! Runs and stops great now (except for the steering wander which I hope to take care of with a Borgeson Intermediate shaft).

Now on to the next job- Everytime I switch on the heater, I get a strong smell of antifreeze. I'm thinking this means a replacement of the heater core, but wanted to check with the pros here before I devote another weekend tearing into the dash.

Thanks!
