Default 01 1500 4x2 Front Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly Replacement

Can anyone help with this job. I've looked through the forums and haven't had much luck. I've read to look for 3 back bolts holding it in, but I must be blind because I don't see it.

I'm also wanting to replace the mounts, but these aren't bolts?

looks like that hub is gonna come apart by removing the nut on the spindle. if you had the new one to view it would help but I really see no other way. maybe only 4x4's have the 3 bolts on the inside. as far as the ball joints go, they are riveted in place. you can use an air chiesel, fire wrench, or a drill to remove them. new bj's come with bolts. a tough job to do in the driveway. since you should probably get an alignment when done, maybe see how much it would cost for the shop to install your ball joints?

since i don't see any bolts on the back either, i guess thats 4wd only. squirrels recently did his 2wd. i think? he found out that the big axle/spindle nut was 1-3/8??? on 2wd and the big nut had a nylon locker on it that said do not reuse. it was listed on napa or dealer.

ball joint rivets have to be cut or drilled out.

Default So what parts?

So if the bearing/hub/spindle (not quite sure what a spindle is) is all one assembly, what part am I ordering? When I go to autozone, they pull up the bearing/hub assembly and it doesn't look like the piece on my truck.

This i what Autozone brings up, and I don't see anything actually holding the hub/bearing onto the truck, aside from the big nut that everybody asks what size it is.

Any thoughts?

its not all one assembly. the spindle is the end of the axle. the threaded part the big nut goes onto. take that nut off and the hub assembly should come off. it looks to me like a regular bearing set up, just doesnt have bearings. usually hub assemblies will have studs or bolts in the back.

oh, when you put the new one on. remember. tighten it down by hand, good and tight. then back it off a little bit... that will set it..i think that info applies here anyway. i know thats what you do with bearings

see page 2-9 of the 01 service manual above for a 2wd picture.
the spindle is pressed into the knuckle.
the big nut holds the hub on.
torque is 185 ft lbs on a 1500. NOT finger tight like on a tapered brg.

also - the picture above includes a tone ring for the 4 wheel ABS, so you need to know whether you have 2wh ABS or 4wh ABS.

The other day me and my dad replaced the front wheel bearings on are 4x4 2001 durango. What we had to do to get the wheel bearings off there is get the big nut off the axle. I think it was the passenger side that came off very easily, but, the driver side however took about 6 hours. We went through 4 breaker bars and a couple pickle forks. Still wouldnt come off, so we eventually grinded it off and then we were able to get on with the job. So to get the wheel bearings off a durango at least, you just have to get the big nut off the axle. Hope this helps
