Default gas gage issue and hard starting???

Can someone help me out with this issue? I can hear the fuel pump when key gets turned on but it still cranks then sputters when it finally starts. This is happening to my 98 Ram 2500 5.9L 360.

How many miles on the truck? When is the last time you did a tune-up? Have you checked fuel pressure? Is the CEL on?

There is 76,000 mi. I did plugs cap n rotor a week ago wires have yet to be done.(previous owner replaced them in April of this year though as I have records. Was running great until I pulled a trailer from NH to NC in June. It has this issue even with warm starts. CEL is not on and I have not checked pressure as I relocated without my tools.

Might be an IAC problem. Once the truck starts, does it eventually run ok? Or does it always run crappy?

Ok I am not too tech savvy. What is IAC? It runs fine just a lack of power. Then once I shut it off it is hard starting again. Once it finally catches, it is really rough almost wanting to stall.

Plenum blown, cat clogged, precat o2 sensor bad. TB, and IAC can be cleaned to try and see if it helps, but I doubt it. Oh, and btw, IAC is the sensor on back of the throttle body.

Thats what I was afraid of ( PLENUM ) I appreciate the input, what would have caused that issue? I had read that if I had excessive oil consumption that would means the Plenum gasket as well.

from your description, the fuel pump seems to be okay...however, the fuel filter might need to be replaced...i would also check the lines to make sure there is enough fuel coming from the tank...the lines shouldn't be an issue, but they can't be completely ruled out...if there is a lot of "debris" or "bad gas" in the fuel system, then your engine will not be getting the necessary fuel to run cleanly and properly (combustion cycle is lacking fuel), hence, a lack of power

Yes, excessive oil consumption and bad gas mileage. Well, worse gas mileage! They get bad gas mileage when things are working correctly,LOL
