Yeah that's correct. You still have to have the lid up to use it

Just build your own. It might take awhile but you'll be happy with the results and if you're not then it's your fault.

I've been using one of these for years. I wedge it between the center and the passenger seat. Never had any issues and you can pick them up at most auto part stores.

You dont have to have the lid up, to use the genos cupholder it stays closed and it comes with velcro so if you open it, it wont go anywhere doesnt go anywhere when the seat goes up either just make sure you empty the extra slots and it stays with the top of the console

You really dont need install instructions for it just open lid, empty front slot, slide in cupholder, adjust the latch bar with visegrips(this is done twisting it out), then close lid and your done, if you think you need the velcro installed you can install it or for extra protection use a self tapping screw.

Here is a couple pictures, if you want more let me know and I can get more, the 98 IIRC and newer are a little different because the console is a little different

Oh yeah this thing is great I can put drinks in it and drift corners at 30 plus and guess what they stay were they belong in the cupholder the stock POS cupholders drop drinks going 5 mph in the parking lot

Oh okay, I see how it works now. That's awesome! Anyone with a manual transmission have one?I don't think it would hit, but I'm not sure.

The problem with making just a lid for the console is that its not deep enough to hold a cup with out having the same problem we all deal with, on the stock cupholder, the genos is pretty deep a can sits about level with the top

Yep, the 94-97 cup holders are notoriously crappy. I have many memories from my childhood where I was burned by hot coffee when my uncle's mug fell out of the cup holder in his '96, almost every day.
