You will need an angle grinder to remove the clips. Make sure that you replace the clips with something substantial, as the leaves WILL spread apart.
I knew one guy who had the pack slowly spread out and cut into his tire very progressively, almost like a lathe. And the was another guy who sort of got away with using a U-bolt, but he ended up using a beefier ubolt that seems to do alright.
