94 Ram 1500 A couple of problems
Hi All:
New to this forum. I have a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.9 lt. motor with Auto trans. Lately the check engine light has been coming on? It always had ran great, but now it seems to be staving for fuel on the highway. My son seems to think the cat converter is starting to plug up? On anothe rissue, my front pass side axle is making clicking noises. Any one replced one? If so, does it require any special tools or knowledge?
Thanks

The best way to test the cat is to have someone in the cab rev the motor to about 2000 or 2500 rpm's and put a temp gun on the input and output of the cat. the output should be around 50 deg hotter than the input for proper cat operation. if the temps are the same, the cat is not working, if the input temp is high and the output temp is low, you have a plugged cat and you should have it swapped out ASAP.
you can also check the codes by turning the key on-off-on-off-on and reading the CE light output. It'll flash at you.
You might want to check the fuel pump for correct pressure, there should be a schrader valve on the fuel rail, hook a guage up to it and measure the fuel pressure

my check engine light does that as well............but my truck runs fine when it comes on.............it comes on live once every month or so and stays on for about 2 or 3 days then goes back out...........so im just guessing it is the oxygen sensor........so you may want to check your o2 sensor........as for the axle i have never had mine apart so i have no idea on what all you will need
i had a 97 dodge that the check engin light would come on every once in a while also. at the same time i had a very small auto transmission problem. well the transmission problem slowly grew, but the check engine light still only came on about once a month. turns out the light was because of something going out in the transmission.
I just did a right side universal change it wasnt too bad but u will need a 1 11/16 socket to get the hub nut off if its rusted it could be a pain mine took a couple of days due to the rust but its done and its quiet again also the hubnut was really torqued on I was almost attempted to cut the nut off but dodge told me it was 30 bucks for the nut itself but its not that bad to change the universal I suggest u have a bench vice ,1 11/16 socket a propane torch, thats all we needed besides basic tools if u have any questions email me and i will help u as much as i can
Not Not
To be exact its 25.99[&:] I just bought one for my truck, because the previous owner decided it would be a good idea to cut the old axle nut off with a torch and replace it with a lug nut off a semi [:@] Unfortunatly when he did this, he mangled the threads on the stub shaft and cut into the splines with the torch and took chunks out of it.
New Stub shaft = 80 bucks[>:]
My parts get here monday, blah

Well I found the time & got to replacing the Universal joint on my front right side. I did not have the 1'&11/16 socket, but the nut is slotted. One whack with a hammer & chisel it came loose. It was very easy from there. all in all it took about 45 minutes to do. No more clunking.
