Unhappy Rear noise issue

Hey everyone,

We are currently in the Badlands.

Well here's the deal. Last night we trucked about 560 miles and half way through the truck developed a pretty bad noise in the rear. We went to the closest mechanic which is about an hour from out site. After getting the run around for a couple hours, we finally got in the shop. He thought it was a wheel bearing but ruled that out. He said the only other thing it could be is the pinion.

Now here is the question.
He said he can get a used differential from a yard in Rapid City and he could install it.
Cost around $1100
Mileage on part: 100,000
Time: from noon to 5pm

The other option is to rebuild the current differential for about the same cost if not more because of labor and said I would most likely have a noise after the rebuild.

There is also a dodge dealer in Philip which is also close but I was figuring they would cost a great deal more.

I have to call this guy at 8am mountain time to say if I want to go forward.

What other options do I have or what do you think I should do?
Is the price about right or is he inflating it because I'm from out-of-town?
Rebuild the current one or go with the used part?
Why is there so much grass out here?
Where did all these rock formations come from?

expedited answers needed please.
