Rear Differential Fix
Hey all, I apoligize ahead of time if this tread or something similar exists, I tried looking but couldnt find it...
None the less, I'm in the process of replacing the clutch packs on my rear differential for my 2001 4x4 1500. I'd noticed a large amount of metal shavings in the fluid when I checked it one day, and upon removal of the differential cover I found chunks of metal inside. They were pieces of the smooth washer on the inner most part of the clutch pack, touching the side gear. So after some work and an intense search for the parts, ive got everything out and ready to go back in. I'm put the side gears back in with the new clutch packs and washer (from what ive read, its a spring washer). The trick now, is getting the top and bottom gears in. Not quite sure how to do this. Ive read something similar in a different part of the forum where someone used bolts and washers to compress the clutch pack? will that work, and then just leave those in until I manage to get the top and bottom gears in?
When I put the pinion shaft in its incredibly close to fitting but most likely due to those cupped washers It wont quite fit inbetween the axle shafts.
So yeah, If anyone has done a writeup or knows about this it would be GREATLY appreciated Thanks!

I bet you can find the answer in our 2001 Dodge Ram factory service manual!

Alright I think ive got it, basically need a forcing screw or something similar to compress the clutch packs. I'll mess around with it, doesnt seem too bad but anyone had experience with this before or perhaps know any tips or tricks to making this work smoother? Thanks for the help, that manual is the coolest thing ive got in ages...awesome.
Well, maybe I dont have it, i'm trying to get the upper and lower gears in without taking the differential housing out of the truck. I can compress the washers on the side gears with a bolt between the axle, but I dont think thats getting me anywhere. Maybe if I compress it on the gears themselves? Gota go find a longer bolt for that, maybe an inch and a half or so. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
