Default Transmission Problems

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2l V8 and when I'm driving it's like my transmission can't decide which gear to stay in. When going about 55 mph I notice that my RPM gauge keeps going up and down, and I can feel the transmission shifting back and forth like it can't decide which gear it want's to be in. This is with OD on and off. What's my problem?

Replace the TPS, if that doesn't help, could be this https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ise-speed.html

Is there a way to test the TPS before I just go out and replace it?

Do you have a Haynes manual at least ? You can also download this https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...-gen-rams.html It's for 2001, but most of the info is the same for a 97. Either one has the info for testing it.

I really hope this is the problem, because I don't want to have to install a new transmission. Also my father said to clean the IAC motor. Will that cause my problem also?

the IAC will cause the motor to run rough.

and hows your fluid? check while running in neutral....may need a filter/fluid change, how many miles? do you tow?

136xxx. I don't tow with it. I'm sure the people who owned it before me did. It has air shocks on the back lol. My fluid is red. It's not brown and burnt.

Could be your VSS or TPS. Do you have any engine codes?

The IAC will not cause surging or RPM jumps while driving. Test the TPS or just replace it.
