Default ABS/Parking Brake Issues.

Hello, All.

Wondering if anyone could help me shine some light on the situation. I have a 1996 Ram 1500, 5.2L. The ABS/Parking brake light stays on, And On occasion when I hit the brakes, My abs will kick in, then both lights turn off, once going again they usually come right back on. The brakes, and rotors are all fine not warn or warped. Truck stops fine, No issues. And the axle seals don't appear to be leaking.

Wondering, what course of action or where I should start looking before I have to open up the wallet. Thanks for your time, And your help.

What year truck? RWAL, or 4WAL? Does your speedometer work right?

That wasn't there the first time. Honest.........

As it's a 96..... more than likely RWAL, so, best guess would be the Rear Wheel speed sensor in the differential.

Hah, Yes it's been there the whole time!!! but you have helped so I won't hold it against ya!!

But yes it's a 4x4 for got to mention, and has a manual transmission. But thanks for your reply I will look into the Rear Wheel speed sensor first thing tomorrow.

I just replaced my ABS Speed sensor! Do as the various forums say: DO NOT HIT THE SENSOR WITH ANYTHING (not even a tap!)

Mine snapped in half flush with the differential. Much swearing and frustration ensued. My ABS and Brake lights didn't come on at all (my speedo went south on me). When this sensor snapped, you guessed it, I now had no speedo AND an ABS and Brake lights on.

It's still a DIY job (IMO), but be very careful trying to get that thing out of there. If it is corroded onto the differential a bit, I'd suggest a super small flathead screwdriver tapped EVENLY around it to loosen it up a bit. Then lift and wiggle. If I hadn't broke it, it would have been a 10 minute job to pull and replace it (and I have next to no mechanical skills, learning on the fly).

Good luck. (the speedo, btw, was controlled by transmission speed sensor. Another 5 to 10 minute replacement job with a bit of splicing needed in my case).
