I would go with a pioneer head unit, love mine got it for $200 installed right after it came out, you can find a decent one for around $100, some pioneer speakers will do just fine since your not looking for bass, you could easily get in for under $300.

Millionbuy is a good site to get some stuff from too

I bought a $300 Pioneer head unit, $200-$250 (can't recall exactly) 6x9 Infinity Reference speakers, and $150 5.25" Infinity Reference speakers for the rear. Those were retail prices... I got the whole set for a bit under $500 total, IIRC. Got to love the Best Buy discount.

Pioneer and Alpine have the best quality and audio. Kenwood isn't that bad either.

I would go with a basic Pioneer HU with Infinity speakers.

Good lord. You sir are setting this person up to have a great mess on his hands.

Bazooka anything needs to be pitched in the trash. You can't even buy that crap at walmart anymore!

Sony is MEH ok, but only if you intend on their product lasting you just over a year. Some people get along great with them, but most have issues in a short period of time.

I imagine you could get a decent setup for $300. And it would probably do just fine in an older truck that isn't whisper-quiet.
For about an extra $100 he can line that entire truck in a matting that will deaden the sound from the outside. Not a totally requirement on these trucks, but an option nonetheless.

I am glad to see that people are starting to give Pioneer the credit that the brand is readily due for. I have had both the privilege and the curse of playing with most of the big brand names out on the market today and in my honest and professional opinion, Pioneer products are the absolute way to go when you are looking for head units only. Their speakers tend to fall off the cart so to speak though.

To the OP, I really hate to get you confused on products and all, but there are just some brands in here that you should stay far far away from. I made mention of this earlier, but I'll elaborate on it a little more. Once again, I have had a lot of hands on time with most of the major brands out on the market today and I see the pros and cons to all of them. Albeit some of those brands have no pros going for them at all.

When you are looking at a head unit, be wary of the ones you see about that are priced $100 or less. That is, unless you can find a place that is selling a decent brand at a tent sale for a major discount. This is usually at the end of the year, NOW, and the models that are marked way down are ones that are being discontinued.

In terms of brands for head units, there are really only two on the market right now worth mentioning. The first one is Pioneer/Primer. Pioneer makes Primer by the way. I have found that the internal hardware on them is almost bullet proof in that over time they will hold up better than most brands. Another thing that I like about them is the simplicity that you will find in terms of navigating around on the screen. I am a strong advocate of being able to change any setting on a radio while not having to take my eyes off the road. Of course this is different for everyone but I just find Pioneer to be really easy to use. Another brand that you should consider is Alpine. Although they aren't my favorite, I must give credit where credit is due. They make a great product. The only reason I don't care for them is that their interface has about twice the buttons that a Pioneer unit does. It does seem here lately though that they are changing this and migrating over to a more simplistic setup.

Now, when it comes to speakers, you have quite a bit more leeway in what is good and what is not so great. I have found that for people who don't want to drop a lot of cash on a system, Infinity Reference series speakers are damn near perfect. Especially if you are more focused on getting highs out of your audio. Another brand that is good for beginners is Polk. Polk got their start in Home audio, and once they saw a market for it, they jumped into the car audio scene hot and heavy. For a basic setup, they have dominated in cost to performance ratios.

Next up in the line of speakers to me is Alpine. Their speakers tend to be more for the mid range guys. I'm talking people who aren't down right crazy about performance, but they do want a little more thump than their average speaker swap. For YOU the problem is going to be not only the added cost of the speaker, but in most cases, you will also need to add an external amp to them as well.

I have seen mention of a few different speaker brands such as Sony, Bazooka, and JVC... Be careful with brands like this. First and foremost, when a brand doesn't list the RMS rating of their equipment, but rather, they spout about the peak watt handling, RUN FAR FAR AWAY and throw a stick of dynamite over your shoulder as you take off. I have seen enough to say that when a brand advertises like this, it means complete JUNK!. Overall build quality and materials used is a big thing in not only the truck world. It is a major thing in the audio industry. A plastic cone or paper cone will not last and it will not sound decent from the get go.

In short, brands such as Infinity, Alpine, Polk, Eclipse, Fujitsu-ten (Mother company to Eclipse), Hertz, MaContosh, and a select other few are great brands to be looking at.

I am not going to repeat what I have said in countless other threads. Therefore, I implore you to search around and read some of my other long winded posts on like topics.

When it comes to what will fit in your truck, the front speakers will house a 6X9, but can be easily modified to fit a 5 1/4 speaker. In the rear, they will house a 5 1/4 and can be modified to fit a 6 1/2- not as easy.

Do a little leg work and post up what you're looking at and we'll take a look.

EDIT: To give you a head start, you need to match RMS watts between the head unit and the speakers. Speakers need a certain amount of power at all times. This is your RMS rating. You'll find that most speakers will support a range of RMS watts, but some wont, so that is the main thing that you have to consider when looking at speakers and a power source for them.

if you currently have an infinity speakers, they have some funny wiring for the amps in the doors. to simplify things, i'd rewire those speakers.

as said, doors are shallow 6x9 (crutchfield recommends 6.5 replacements). rears are 5.25 although 6.5's will fit.
be careful with the depth of the fronts. you only have about 3" to work with. some speakers are too deep to fit.

edit - since i have a regular cab and a small amp, i disconnected my rear speakers. no need for them and i didn't want to waste money replacing them.

if you want something nice and simple, just get a standard aftermarket unit, and either 2 or 4 new speakers. wiring adapter, dash kit, (maybe) new speaker wire.

You are not reading this post too good, aren't you? Didn't you read that he only has 250.00 300.00 for the stereo upgrade? I was showing him what he could get with that budget. The stuff is out there, he just needs to look for it! Chill out!!!

I really appretiate the advice Im getting!
I was reccomended this set up.
Seeing that I dont know much, I guess its a starting point. The reviews seem good. Reviews are all I have to go off of. All in all, this isnt a pro build. Its just a "better than stock, able to plug the ipod in" system.

After reading what Laramie1997 said about RMS, this setup doesnt seem to be quite right without puting an external amp on the speakers.

I know what his price range is. You can a lot with what he has, and with what you showed him.... Oye. I'm telling you that you set him up for one of the biggest face palm fails in the business. I am also hinting at the idea that he also needs to save up a few more pennies before jumping into his audio.

OP...

Head Unit- http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...+DEH-22UB.html

Front speakers- http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...dio+db691.html

Rear speakers- http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...dio+db521.html

109+99+60= $268

Those speakers will handle up to 100w RMS, but will gladly take the 14w RMS that the head unit puts out.

I also recommend that with your infinity system, that you run ALL new wire to the head unit. It may seem like more work up front over using what is already in place, but trust me, it's easier on your head when you have to go through with a multimeter trying to find what wire goes where.

Here is my suggestions and very similiar with what im gonna end up getting, I had originally wanted some kappa's but not sure if I want to amp.

Headunit
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1302200...B.html?tp=5684
Simple fairly cheap head unit, and I would get from crutchfeild cause it comes with the harness and stuff needed. also they have it in the scratch and dent for a little less.

Front speakers
http://www.millionbuy.com/inf9633cf.html
Rears
http://www.millionbuy.com/inf5032cf.html
or
http://www.millionbuy.com/inf6032cf.html
Have been told these will fit and they have a higher rms rating vs. the 5.25 for the same price

That will set you back around 280 and will sound much better than stock

I don't mean to hijack this thread but someone mentioned the infinity and wiring. I am in the same boat (I have an aftermarket setup that I am installing in a stock setup) and can't ring out the wires to the speakers from the HU. Is there an amp that is in line with these wires?

If you have the factory "amps", they'll be a few inches long and crescent or half circle shaped. You'll have one attached to each 6x9 speaker (front doors).
