Stereo Advice Please
My factory unit turns up when I turn it down and down when I turn it up and most of the time just does nothing. The tweeters dont work, the door speakers sound like poo, and the whole system pops with engine speed sometimes.
I have about 250-300 bucks to spend.
I want a head unit and 4 door speakers.
I guess I dont need tweeters if I get good sound from the door speakers, unless someone thinks thats a bad idea.
Any ideas on good clean sound at this price. (I have a sub and amp)
Thanks

check crutchfield.com or sonicelectronics.com they both got good deals and you can search by make and model of vehicle and they will show you what you can use. also crutchfield will give you the install kit with purchase. for that amount you can get a decent deal. good luck !!

honestly 300 dollars to spend on the whole setup will get you some walmart specials unless you spend many hours on amazon or a website of that sort. especially if your pushing a full system you might wanna spend about 400-500 on the head unit and speakers if you want the rest of the stereo to keep up with the sub. find you a good set of 6x9s for the front and 5 1/4s for the rear. and as far as the deck goes just do your research on it find what options you want and price hunt like a ****.
scratch and dent baby.. I just picked up a JVC Arsenal KD-ADV49, a XM (what the hell ever you call those things that let you play XM in 'ready' units), and six speakers (4- 6 3/4", 2- dash tweeters), and adapter harness for the set-up.... total: $340... not too bad, eh?
I searched Crutchfield until I was satisfied about fit and such, and then researched the harnesses ect... then went amazoning until I found one of three I had chosen (head units) on a scratch and dent closeout..
You can do what you want to do with the money you've set aside if you have patience.. It's just a matter of waiting until you find what you're looking for at a price you're comfortable spending- and having the discipline to wait instead of feeding the need to buy spontaneously..

I kindly disagree you have to spend 400-500 for a setup. Depending on what you want out of your system. If you want some good thud and wake up the neighbor hood yeah 400-500. However, if you just want a good head unit some very nice units have come down in price compared to 2 to 3 years ago. If you spend $200-300 will get you can get a nice head unit and at least a pair of very nice 6 x 9's
I guess it also depends on what kind of music you like to listen to. I listen to modern hard rock or metal and classic rock. So Just buying a cheap 10 inch pioneer 340 watt amp and some good 6 x 9's it was perfect for me.

Im not looking for anything fancy.
I cant justify spending $500 for stereo equipment in a beat up old truck.
Come on guys, this is for talk radio!!!
Just kidding about the talk radio thing. Really though, Im looking for a clean sound. Anything will beat whats in there.
Im looking to spend ~$250 for:
(1) head unit
(2) 6x9's that can be run from the head unit, ie. no amp
(2) 5.25's for the rear
maybe tweeters
No sub
I just dont know things like, how to piece together a HU that will power the new speakers, and should I buy component speakers for the front, or do component speakers need an amp, ect........
Im need advice on getting components that work together. I dont need $300 800 watt 6x9s seeing that Im not going to power them.
We are going simple here folks.
Oh, and if I wanted "walmart specials" I would have gone and got some without asking the boards advice. I know I can spend 300 and get something way better than "walmart specials" and WAY better than stock.

Ok, typically i have found Pioneer to be the best head unit for price, sound and durability. Should be able to get a decent one for about 150, with a built in amp for your speakers. With speakers I have always went with Sony, they typically have a low profile design and will fit in your door like the factory ones. I would look for a 3way 6x9 and 2 way 5.25s. each pair should cost you about 90 bucks or so. I would just keep checking your local shops for when they have sales, usually you can get them to bundle everything for a decent deal.

Sorry for not having a good recommendation, but one question would be how noisy your truck is and if spending the extra bucks on a better system would be worth it. Mine isn't bad noise-wise, but then again it isn't anywhere near as quiet as my wife's car.
I imagine you could get a decent setup for $300. And it would probably do just fine in an older truck that isn't whisper-quiet.

I have a Pioneer unit that I took out of my truck. It was in my truck when I bough it and I hate aftermarket radios so I replaced it with a stock unit. I'll sell it to you real cheap if you're interested. Comes with the bracket and a remote control.
