Default Winter Tires

Hey Guys, Winter is pretty much here in North Dakota with Blizzard Warning already posted. I need to find some new tires for my 4x2. Last winter the stock tires just were not cutting it. I added sand bags and still spun like crazy.

Im looking to get a couple of studded rear tires. I have 245/75/16 on their now. How big can I go in the rear? Ive heard taller and skinnier tires will help in the snow and ice. The studs are a must. Ive been looking at General AltiMAX Arctic tires.

I spent the last 2 winters in the upper peninsula of Michigan, everyone up there ran Firestone Winterforce and swore by them

did you put the sand bags up against the cab? before the axle? if not this is why you were still sliding....


i had regular street tires on my ram last winter before i bought my new tires, and i never had a problem....i have my truck toolbox, which is full, that added all the weight i needed.

I'll have to check I forgot how much total weight in sand bags I had. I placed them right over the axle about mid box.

I guess it wasn't much sliding as I got hung up spinning on some ice spots. Had an old 71 chevy that spun just like it on ice until I put some good snow tires on. And No, its not my driving style im not a rookie winter driver this being my 8th winter coming up having many miles between home and college.

I guess i'll have to test a few different combination in weight distribution this winter then. Your suggesting putting the weight against the cab?

The firestone winterforce as previously mentioned are cheap, and awesome. Also studdable.

And yes, skinnier is better. A 235 is just about perfect and will be what I'm putting on my 2x4.

Its 4x2. A 2x4 is a piece of wood.
