Let me start off by saying, the best Ranger based forum is www.therangerstation.com. I say that not only because I am a moderator there, but it is one of the largest out there.

Now to answer your question.

If it was out of fluid, he would still be able to shift into the gears. Sounds to me that the syncros have gone bad. Best bet would be to remove the shifter off the transmission and look into the syncros and the transmission to see if you can see anything else that might be wrong in there.

he can still shift into the gears, but it just revs up like he lost the clutch, but the clutch is brand new. all this happened while he was driving home down the highway last night.

I doubt it is the slave cylinder, but check for fluid from under the truck. If it was the slave cylinder, it would still go in all gears, just impossible to shift with the clutch.

Check to make sure that the transmission has fluid in it. If it doesn't, then you need to check the gears inside the transmission to see if they haven't been ground off from friction and heat.

yes it could be the slave, if it goes dry, the prong can get wedged in place, and it will disable the truck from going into any gear.

he can still put it in any gear, but the only gear that works is 4th gear. all the others just rev like it would if you lost the clutch. so thinking about it now there is no way its the slave cylinder. im thinking like what mjonesjr said, that the tranny lost all the fluid overheated and the gears got ground off.

If you read what the OP has posted, it in no way could be a bad slave. The OP stated that it would only go forward in 4th gear, but still could shift into all other gears and only rev, then in no way could it be the slave cylinder. If the slave cylinder was bad, when the truck was running you would have to have the engine and transmission running at the same RPM to shift it.
