Yet another A/C Compressor noise
Hi folks. I have read all of the posts regarding noises from the A/C Compressor, but, as so often happens, they are not quite what I am experiencing.
This has only been going on for about two weeks, and does not happen all of the time...
When I start the truck, after about 3-5 minutes of idling, I will hear a medium-high pitched noise (not a whistle, more like a moan maybe). It will start out kind of softly, then go away, then come back louder, and louder. It sometimes will go on for a few minutes, but mostly comes and goes. If I rev the engine, it will increase in pitch then go away, and will come back again at idle. I know it is coming from the compressor, as I have taken the stethoscope to it and several other components while the noise is happening and the compressor is the only component that is making the noise. Ok, I am rambling...
My A/C has never worked since I bought the truck (second owner). Never looked into why, just never really needed it I guess.
My question is this: Could the compressor be heading south, or could it be something else?
Truck stats:
1998 Ram 1500 Extended Cab 4x2
5.2L Engine
46RH Overdrive Transmission
124K miles
Thanks in advance for any ideas you may throw my way!
Dave
BTW, I read that the compressor can be bypassed by using a smaller belt. Anyone have a part number for the belt?
Thanks again!

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram and my friend is a Dodge mechanic. I took my truck in to get serviced and he recommended that I pull out the fuse for the compressor. I live in the Northwest and dont really have the need for A/C. It basically disables the compressor and saves on gas mileage. And since you mentioned you never use the A/C anyway it sounds like a cheap fix to your noise problems. My fuse box was under the hood near the drivers side. You can alwyas plug it back in in the Summer. Less wear and tear on the compressor and should last alot longer. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Thanks for the quick replies, guys! You are tight, HeyYou, it is the 46RE... don't know how I got the H in there...
Anyway, the noise has now become a grinding sound so I have parked the beast until I can get the smaller belt and bypass the compressor completely.
Thanks again!
