Default Do 98 trucks need new speedo gears? or a computer reprogram?

I have a 98 ram.

I was searching the forums, and it looks like 98 was the cuttoff? I saw some places say "98 and below" need gears, and I read "98 and above" don't need gears- so what is it for 98s? Do I just need to calculate and replace the speedo gear? Or do I just need to go get it reprogrammed?

Thanks!

For tire size I assume? It's calibrated through the PCM. Hypertech or Superchips tuners both do that, as does some dealers that know what they are doing.

don't get a hypertech. i've got one for my 01 and it skips the tire size prompt. hypertech says its because i have rear wheel abs instead of 4 wheel abs, but i don't think they really know... nor care.

I have the older PP 3 Hypertech from my 98 still and tire size worked. I'd sell it to him, but even when set back to stock I think it is vin locked. Don't know if the newer ones work or if some years are a problem.

A lot of aftermarket scanners will calibrate pinion factor on Chryslers, too. I've done it many times with my old brick.

Best bet dollar-wise is to find a local mechanic who owns a scanner with such capability and offer him $10 or $20 tip to step outside and do it for ya real quick.

and you've got rear wheel abs right? and it worked?

i wonder if the units have 2 stages of VIN lock. maybe one on the tune and another on the tire size prompt. i don't know. neither do they.

superchips is a far better tuner. it reprogrammed my tune, speedo, and OD shift up from around 42-ish up to 55-ish. much much better drivability. and no problems.

Yes, rear wheel only abs. And I do agree that the SC is better. Long story, but the Hyper came direct from them. I was asked the vin# and suspect they programmed it in.
