Default Buying a 1998 dodge ram 1500

Hey guys, I figured I would come on this forum and ask a few questions since I haven't owned a ram before. Im planning on buying this truck from my mother and father-in laws for $5000. It got 89,000 miles on it and seems in good condition. Its got the 5 speed manual with the extended cab (SLT Laramie), so do I need to worry about my transmission giving out on it? I also cannot tell whether its the 5.2 or the 5.9L it doesn't say it on the airbox. Anything I should be aware of? I know the CEL light is on and I believe my brother in-law said that he checked it and it was an O2 sensor. Doesn't the v8s come with two? And if so do I need to replace both to get that CEL light off? That light bugs me haha.

There are at least 2x02 sensors on the 5.2/5.9. See if the error code is overvoltage, that is a typical sign of a bad 02 sensor. Rarely does more than 1 sensor fail so if you do a bit of tinkering with a multimeter you should be able to figure out which one is bad.

Not a bad deal for 5K though. Wish I had a manual in my rig, those are getting harder to come by these days.

Its a 5.2L the manual trans only came behind the 5.2L in the 1/2 tons.

The tranny is an NV3500. Plenty stout for most use and much much better than a auto.

Great to hear. So recently the clutch got replaced and ever since then my brother in-law said that it pops out of reverse. I tried reversing and it sometimes pops out, but not if alittle pressure is applied. Should I be worried about it?

Might just be me but I don't think the truck is worth 5K with a CEL and transmission problems. I'm thinking closer to 4K but hey what do I know LOL...

Just messin but I wouldn't mind seeing it....

Pops out of reverse? Sounds like a trans issue. Also, I would make sure the 02 sensors turn the light off before you buy it. 5k does sound a little high. But I bought the same rig from a buddy for $1500, and doesn't have as big of problems that rig sounds like it has....

Don't know about the price, that is up to you. I bought a 98 1500 quadcab slt laramie with 5.2 auto 4 years ago with 60K on it for 4900. I still own and drive the truck everyday. I have only had to replace the brakes and two days ago the radiator was leaking along the seam so I replaced it. My truck has never left me stranded and has been solid and dependable since I bought it. I have right at 130K on it and would drive it anywhere. If I could get 5000 for it I still wouldn't sell it because I couldn't replace it with something that reliable that I trust for 5000.
All that said, I would definetly want the CEL taken care of and transmission checked out before I even considered purhcasing the truck.

Well I took it out for a test drive and reverse never popped out on me. I havent gotten to check out whats with the CEL. I did on the other hand found some possibly oil leaking down the left bottom side of the engine towards the front. I wiped it off with a paper towel and I couldnt tell if its just grease or oil. It has been snowing too so I dont know if some snow melted went down the side and I wiped it off with some grunge and dirt. The truck seems good condition when driving. Has alot of power and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary. Except I think the tire size on the truck is wrong because when I make a tight turn I hear a weird rattle noise. The tires on it are 285/75/R16s. I dont think that they are the stock size. My brother in-law would help me work on it and stuff if I was to get it. He used to do mechanical work.
