transmission swap question
I got talked into helping out this old man down the road, maybe you guys could help me help him.
He had a 2000 ram with a 5.9 and it got t boned. He bought a 96 sport with a 5.9 but the tranny died out. Can the tranny from the 00 go into the 96? Will it need the other sensors?
His nephew says the two trannys are different and not interchangable, I think the nephew is just lazy. Who is right? Is it a huge undertaking?
Thanks for your help.

You can use the main barrel/case but the OD units are different. You would need to rebuild the OD unit/tail shaft on the 96. Hope that answers your question. You should be able to buy a rebuilt unit from PACT for about $350.
I doubt the main harness is going to plug in. The TCC and OD solenoid harness and connector are different. You'd have to swap those along with the Gov switch and solenoid. Maybe even the Gov body.
Your absolutely right Zman. I totally over looked it. The 96 TCC harness will fit trannys from 96-99 (for some reason I thought it was 96-00) and the 2000 will fit from 2000 and on. However, after looking at them both (threw the PACT site, just click on the pic to zoom in) it seems as if the TCC harness is the only thing that changed in order to accommodate the newer gov sensor & solenoid.
