Why would you not want to use the correct fork? have one on hand? (yeah, free is a hell of a lot better than having to buy one.....)

No clue on if you can use it or not though.

Default Transfer Case

1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD - transfer case is a 231D i have a broken fork - number 16976 - I have heard you can use a 17833 fork in its place. Has anyone else heard this? Is there any problems with using the 17833 fork instead of the 16976 fork???

I am having trouble finding a 16976 and can get a 17833 a lot easier. My fork is broken and needs to be replaced.

The dealership? Contact New Venture directly? Or, try here. Not quite half way down the page. Range fork, and mode fork.

Notta clue. Call the dealership, and ask them. They would have a MUCH better idea. (or, a junkyard that has a parts interchange manual.....)

Try calling drivetrain.com(for info on the fork), and get a Transfer Case saver while you are at it. The most common reason a range fork breaks, is because the snap ring lets go. Which is what the TC Saver replaces.
