Default TB installed "My" opinion

Well finally the 52 MM Fastman in, install was easy, what took the longest was cleaning all my old sensors, and while I had it off, inspecting my intake pan for leaks, which there was none just a minimal amount of oil, and yes I used a mirror and looked all over, still think I will do the upgrade. From time to start doing all the extra stuff included it was 1 hr. Unhooked the battery and waiting 15 minutes, while I did that I boxed up the core and got it ready to ship and then hooked her all back up, fired it up, piston came right out the tailpipe, (just kidding) it ran rough for a few seconds then smoothed out.

Now for the test drive, took her out and now I notice that with minimal effort of my big toe (no shoes on) I accelerate very smoothly to 55, as for gas mileage I will have to put a few hundred on before I can tell but overall I highly recommend this modification, I could instantly tell the difference in acceleration.

Im gonna have to say for all those reading that this is a wise choice for an upgrade, seems to be a step in the right direction to improve gas mileage and smoothing out the acceleration curve.

I knew you would like it, congrats [sm=icon_cheers.gif]
What I really liked about it when I put mine on was that the acceleration and response improvements are very noticeable under light to medium throttle too, not just full throttle accleration.

Full throttle isnt that good before the upgrade lol. I dont think Im going to be to sad. It can only get better. Please do tell me how the mpg was. I plan on this upgrade in the future.

congrats on the install.

lol, Riiiggghhht... you just go on believing that your gonna get better gas milage... your right foot is already dictating how your gonna use all the new throttle response... lol [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

like the rest of us who have the Fastman... good luck trying to keep your foot out of it! [sm=gears.gif]

Happy to hear the install is done. I (like other users) knew you'd love it! Congrats!!! [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

I am going to try and restrain myself from romping on it, at least till I do a mileage check...I did get on it today low, middle, and top all seems more responsive, but Im at a half a tank so it dont count for figuring mileage...lol....overall it seems to be a good upgrade, I will be looking at an air induction kit...

what do you have on there now?? if your still stock, I'd highly recommend the K&N FIPK II and eventually upgrade to the 7x9" filter. that combo makes the motor breath alot better at upper rpm's and doesnt loose too much low end. I was real happy with it before the head/RR/Kegger upgrades..., now it's too big. motor screams up top with that filter. just not enough low end to keep me happy...

I also have a FIPK. I used to have an Airaid cold air intake. I definetly like the FIPK better.
Your new TB will work even better after you get an air intake kit that puts more air flow to the TB.
Many have reported that the air intakes you can buy on eBay for cheap are good. I personally don't care for them because they do not have a heat shield (unless you make your own). That is why the FIPK is nice. It installs in under 1 hour, and has a nice heat shield to protect your filter from sucking in heat from the exhaust manifold. I added an additional heat shield to mine to prevent heat from the exhaust saturating into the tube. You can see it in the attached pic. It is amazing the temperature difference under my added heat sheild compared to the temps above it right by the tube. Highly recommend it.

hey that's pretty slick. I used to have my tube insulated and my shield also insulated but with all the work i've been doing to it, it's kinda been shelved for the moment. there is an adhesive insulator that would work great around the shield and intake tube... Thermo-tec I think is the company that makes it. Reed, next time you pop your hood after a run, put your hand on the inside of the heat shield. you'll find it to be warm to the touch. On the bmw, I found that by insulating the inside (or outside) of the heat shield, it helps even more when in heavy traffic or hot days and at long traffic lights. We have a temp sensor that I could get from work that I could take some measurements with (if I ever get some free time... lol, hey wait, that's not funny) of the intake air temp with and without insulation. The meter has a peak function that could help find the peak temps. the only thing is getting it in the airflow... where and how?

my 1st thought would be on the vacuum line that comes from the valve cover gasket or fed thru the air filter area. I think I can bend the probe so it fits the tube, then pop on the filter for the testing. I could do all 4 setups, no insulation, tube insulated, and then the heat shield, then both tube and heat shield.

you guys know that the colder the air, the more power right? something like for every 10 deg drop in temp is worth 1% more hp(??) I forget what it is exactly but it's significant enough to do the mod...

I do know that the colder the intake air, the better the low end which should equal better mpg (cause your foot isnt in it as much to get up to speed and while cruising).

Edit: here's the p/n of the stuff I was thinking of... THE-13575 search on summits site w/that p/n and you should find it.

Ya, I have been meaning to apply some thermo tec to the K&N FIPK heat shield because I noticed some increased temps there as you said. I already have the adhesive back thermotec on the underside of the little shield I pointed out in my picture above. It works great. The tube stays very cool with that little shield there, but under the shield, it is very hot.

I have also wanted to take air temp readings inside the tube too, but I can't find a thermometer that willrecord what the highest and lowest temps were. I was thining you could drill a hole in the FIPK tube, and insert a threaded grommet that you could then screw a sending unit into. From there, I wanted to wire it back into the cab so I could see what my air temps in the tube were while I was driving.
