I spent most of my adult life in Colorado, and 85 octane is just fine until you leave the state. If you're heading south toward Texas/New Mexico or east toward Nebraska/Kansas, bump up a grade if you're not going to fill up again before crossing the border. Going north into Wyoming or west into Utah is no big deal as you'll certainly be filling up again before hitting any lower elevations.
