Bad missfire/surge
My buddy has a 01 ram 1500 318,4x4 auto. We did intake gaskets, plugs(autolights 3923's) cap and rotor all from auto zone only thing we didnt do was wires they are fairly new. I have all the same plugs cap and rotor in my dak and hasnt missed a beat so I dont think its any of that. After we did all this it seemed to have a little miss or it was just weird time to start. The missfire wasnt too bad but a month later its real bad now it surges under load in 5th and when its warm it has a random missfire sometimes its not noticable when cold. Sometimes its just a 1 cyl miss then sometimes its like 4 and it pops and backfires and has no power at all. Im thinking its the crank sensor he already tried the tps his old one was fine but got a new one anyway. Any of you guys have a idea not sure what to check next? Oh and looked at the crank sensor but couldnt get it out worst place ever!! any tips?

The last two times I had a surge in overdrive (what you call 5th) it was from a melted/cracked spark plug wire.
Go over the spark plug wires with a fine tooth comb to check for a crack or melted spot, or if they're lifetime warranty wires then just replace them.
Smack the catalytic converter with a dead blow hammer too, if it rattles then it's bad.
Also, if he can't redline the engine then it's probably bad.

The pre cat o2 will not always give a code if it's bad. I would unscrew it and leave it hanging and see how it runs. The cat can still be clogged even if it does not rattle. Either way, I would probably replace the o2.
edit, I would also check the fuel pressure, with a gauge.
