Yeah the same in Mass it was safety one year then emmisions the next.
Was only about $35 (IIRC) for it everywhere in the state, It's regulated by the DMV.
When they changed the testing to be like Cali, about 60% of the stations stopped doing them cause of the added costs. Now getting a sticker was like waiting in the gas lines in the 70's.

Funny thing is down here in NC they don't check my truck for emmissions, cause it's considered "commercial duty" Now my inspections like $9.

One nice thing about CA, no vehicle inspection. Period. Its awesome for those of us with built trucks who wouldn't pass.

In California, the tech is suposed to check to make sure everything is CARB legal (all the emmisions parts intact) during the smog test. Many don't check too closely. If you have any aftermarket performance parts on the engine, make sure you have the CARB approval sticker readily visible. It will likely not be an issue, but you may get a dillegent tech.

Buy a scanner and check to see if there are any codes in the computer. Fix anything that may be causing a code. If you did a tune up, and if there is no CEL on, you are probably OK.

I hope you don't have to change out the cats. You probably have three of them on your truck. If they are bad, you have to buy a "California approved" cat system. They are very expensive.
