Default 4WD drive goes on and off when in 2WD

Driving along in 2WD and the 4WD drive will come on and then go out for a while and then it will come back on. I know the truck is not in 4WD by the way it drives and handles on pavement. Any suggestions?

Check the switch in the cad unit. Unplug it, take it for a drive, see if it still does it. If it does, the wiring has a short somewhere. If it doesn't. Take the switch out, and see if it is gummed up. If it does the switch thing nicely, check that the vacuum actually switches when you move the tcase from 2 to 4wd. If that works right, pull the cad housing, and see what's going on.

Thanks I will try that. Is the cad unit the same thing as the trasfer case motor? Had a similiar problem with my explorer.

CAD=Central Axle Disconnect. Its on the front axle, passenger side, on the back. There are two vacuum lines, an electrical connection, and a vent hose that go to it. The transfer case has a vacuum switch, the provides vacuum to either side of the actuator on the CAD, via the two hoses.
