Default Coolant!!

What does it mean when you smell coolant through the vents when the heater is on? Is it a heater core or something else? The carpet isnt wet or anything. I only smell it through the vents when the heat is on!!!

Either the heater core is going, you have an underhood leak somewhere, or the guy in front of you has a serious problem......

Thanks! I keep a check on the coolant level and it isnt going down much, but I can smell it every once in a while.

Best you can do then.

Just keep on doing what you are, until the leak becomes readily apparent, (puddle on the ground, windows fogging with the defroster on, that kind of thing.) Once you know what it is, fix it.

While you have the top half of the engine torn down, look for evidence of leaks. Mine had leaks at the upper radiator hose, the heater hose, the bypass hose.... etc. etc. etc..... Basically, a boatload of leaks where they were rather hard, if not impossible, to see.

It is your heater core. The fact that you smell it only with the heat selected on confirms that. I had the exact same symptons...heater core.

heater core. it will gradually get worse and begin fogging the windshield and dripping.

the correct fix is to pull the dash back and replace the heater core.

i always get criticized for suggesting this, but the quick and dirty fix is to put in some stop leak.

I am off the next 12 days for my christmas break from work so I will have plenty of time to fix all these little problems. Yall have a merry christmas!!
