4wd indicator on, 4wd not working
The culprit - 01 Ram 1500 5.9
Starting today, my 4wd decided to die.
The indicator light goes on when I switch to 4L or 4H, and goes off when I switch it to 2wd. But it decides not to actually engage. I found this out the hard way when I drove up my snow covered hill to get home, and started spinning 1/2 way up and slid half way down. Good times were had needless to say. You can hear what seems to be the sounds of it engaging or disengaging, but it obviously doesn't actually happen. Over the past month or so it has had issues coming out of 4wd when disengaging, but the indicator light would always go off within 2 or 3 shifts in and out.
Does anyone have any ideas or tips on this situation. I have never owned a 4wd truck until this one and have had no problems until now (have had truck 1.5 years and only have the cracked dash problem). Thanks for your time.

2 things have to happen in order to have 4wd.
1) t-case must engage and spin the front drive shaft.
2) vacuum operated CAD must connect the passenger side split axle.
the indicator light coming on and off indicates the t-case vacuum switch, and vacuum cad is working.
you need to check that your front drive shaft is turning. or at least check that with engine off and in 2wd, you can spin the front drive shaft by hand. and check that in 4wd its locked up and you cannot spin it.
the best and safest way to test the system is to put it up on 4 jack stands. be very careful of all moving parts.
