Default front axle bearings?

I have a 95 318 auto. Is there a bearing on either side of the actuator? I believe they are, because there is alot of slop. If there is indeed bearings does anyone know a part number?

there is a large bushing or bearing on the inside edge of the CAD.
it supports the end of the inner shaft.

nothing on the outside edge of the cad.

there is a small bushing between the 2 axle halves.
it keeps the 2 halves aligned.

they do both wear out.
you can get them here for cheap.

awesome thanks for that. Next question how do i get that bushing/bearing out? Also It looks like there is a bearing on the outsideof the cad. I know you said theres not, but whatever it may be is very loose. At least a1/4 inch all the way around the shaft any ideas?

do you have the metal inner bearing? if so, it may be good still, not to mention there difficult to remove.

plastic bearing is rather easily pried out (or broke out!)

the bushing can be pried out of the outer shaft, very simple.

there is no outer bearing on the CAD. the location you are describing would be the oil seal. if the seal is loose, it will need to be replaced. if this is the case buy the quad 4x4 kit or remove the carrier. hint: choose the 1st option! it comes at a price but its worth every penny, its simple, and fool proof.

a worn out inner bushing/bearing (the big one) will allow the inner shaft to flop around.
to remove it, you must remove the outer axle and the oil seal (at the outside of the cad). then slide the inner axle out past the cad opening. then pluck the bushing/bearing out (into the cad cavity). if the differential is also removed, you can just tap it out from the pumpkin. if the differential is not removed, you'll have to hook it with something and pluck it out.

the little inner bushing that goes between the axle halves is tapped into the cavity in the end of the shaft. mine was badly worn out, but its in the shaft tight, and its sort of brittle. when i replaced mine, i just broke out the old one in pieces and tapped the new one in with a hammer.

as matt said, no bushing on the outside edge of the cad. that's the oil seal sitting there in its difficult to reach place. if you push sideways on the axle, that seal might flex a little.

the hardest part can be getting the big axle nut off the hub. its a 1-11/16.

see pics here for hub and axle.

get the bushings/bearings from alljeep.
see part numbers in that link above.
also - call them and see if they have seals or seal tools for dana 44 for the same low pricing as their other parts.
if you get seals local, get good SKF from napa or National from Advance. avoid crappy timken seals

how are you planning on removing the seal? actually, the real question is- how are you planning to install the new seal?... PROPERLY!

quad 4x4 sells all needed parts as well as the site dvaughan listed

if you have a plastic bearing, by all means break er out of there! but if its metal, like mine was, see how much play it allows. check it out. if it seems good leave it. i did not replace mine b/c it seemed that it would be a PITA to remove and it allowed no play.

the real fun part is removing the 1-11/16" axle nut! i got the 3/4" socket from sears and stood on my 15" 3/4" drive ratchet bouncing up and down for a good 10 min before the som b**ch gave it up!

hub assembly may or may not be seized, that can aslo get interesting...however, mine werent seized

be sure to change the ujoint while ur in there, dont forget- its got c-clips at the bottom of the caps!

what exactly are you trying to fix?

Ive put new hubs and joints in the last few weeks. So it should be easy. Can I get the bearings at napa or a parts store? Or from alljeep. I need them asap its a plow truck.

they're not normal replacement parts. unlikely to be had at a parts store.
probably dealer only, or 4wd specialty store.
beware - removing the inner axle will require removal of the oil seal, which will probably destroy it.
