Default Axle Seals cost- why is the drivers side so expensive?

I was quoted $700 for the drivers side and $275 for the passenger side... which I found odd because the drivers side took me a matter of 2 hours, and I spent 4 hours on the passenger side and still couldnt get it in (so was bringing the truck in 5 seals, 4 hours later)

If the drivers side is so easy, and the passenger side is so hard (as everyone I've seen talking on the forums has discussed) then why is it so dang expensive to replace the drivers side seal?

They said it was because they had to take out the carrier- well that took me all of 15 minutes?

They go by flat rate...... They have their pretty little labor time guide, and that is the bible. The passenger side IS supposedly easier...... IF you have the special tool for installing the seal. (It does make it MUCH easier......)

if they have the tool, and i bet they do.... its much easier than the drivers side- no carrier removal.

why not do it yourself?

I spent an hour or two trying to get it in, only to find it leaking again, so then I brought it to a friends house and we went through three more seals (breaking two of them), and four hours, trying to get it into place. I decided I'd spend the three hundred bucks because after tearing it apart several times I've still had no luck.

I tried both the slide hammer method, and the press method.

I did replace the drivers side one myself.

Crossed my mind, and I should have done that to start with, but after my neighbor complained that my "truck was on crutches" and several tries, I just gave up.

As long as I can get this truck to 150k and I dont have to spend more than a k or two to do it, I'll be happy. (at 125k now)
