Default Do or dont?

Hey guys Im fairly new to the site... I ran across some guys that gutted their cat to make it louder with the illusion of still having one. My question is is this safe? I have a 44 series flowmaster on my 97 ram 4x4 w/360 it doesnt sound bad but I want a little more rumble! I dont have the cash to buy a magnaflow cat or else I would but at the same time I dont have the cash to fix a fried motor or something

Thanks for the help!

It's safe, but with the requisite disclaimer that it is not legal.

be aware that your truck might do some goofy shat due to the O2 sensor

If you don't have any cash at hand, I wouldn't do it. If you screw something up then you have no way of fixing it. Just leave it be.

Nah -- it'd just set a catalytic converter efficiency code and turn on the CEL. It'd run just fine as long as the pre-cat sensor actually works.

1. Can you weld? because no shop will put on a straight pipe in place of the cat, nor will they weld a gutted cat on. When i lived in Watertown NY, 3 places would not even weld my pipes to my gutted cat when I put in some headers (my 1996) because the cat was hollow. Most inspectors tap on the cat to see if it is hollow. Especially if it is a loud truck

2. The illusion of having a cat will not fix the fact that it will throw a check engine light saying your cat is not working. You will not pass inspection with a CEL.

So, you will have the illusion, but still not pass. Unless you can weld, you are SOL.

Glad i live in montana.... all the shops here will do it *under the table*.. lol. It is illegal, and a hefty fine if caught. I know several people that do it. If you do it you will get a CEL but... that is fixable. Look up online..and here how to do all that to cover my and DF's ***.

97ram, what kind of emissions testing, if any, does your state have.

if they do a tail pipe emissions check, then don't do it, because you likely won't pass. if you have no testing, or just a visual, then you can cut it loose, hollow it out, and weld it back on. remove your O2 sensors before banging and bashing as they are expensive to replace.

you might get a CEL.
and as said, be aware that its illegal.
