Im sure there are thousands of threads dealing with this issue, and although ive looked and looked, I haven't found one listing my problems. When i crank my truck for the first time in the mornings (or anytime it sits for around 5 or 6 hrs) it acts a little funny. When i drop it into reverse I have to give it alot of throttle to begin moving (around 2700 rpms, and yes its automatic!). I would say 92% of the time, when im doing that first back out of the drive in the morning, it will completely slip out of gear once i get rolling in reverse. But once I rev it up it"ll jump back into gear. Any help would be appreciated and sorry for the sloppiness of this thread i just want to knock out two birds with one stone. Or maybe the same problem is causing both of the issues?

i think its the TC filling as long as its not actually JUMPING out of gear, but rather just takes some extra pedal.

Hey You will verify

Thanks for the reply matty675. I wouldnt exactly say its "jumping" out of gear, but more of slipping. But once I notice its out of gear i have to pat my pedal until it "jumps" back in gear. This only happens in reverse, and only when my truck has sat for at least 5 hrs.

In park, on a stock trans, the pump does NOT fill the torque converter with fluid, so, it can take a bit before the trans actually starts to influence the truck. Try putting the truck in neutral for a minute, then shift into whatever gear, and go. See if that works better.

On my truck..... I was having approximately the same problem, and I found that what was really giving me the grief was I had a caliper that was hanging up. So, might wanna check that as well.

NO REVERSE (D RANGES
OK)
1. Gearshift Linkage/Cable
Mis-adjusted/Damaged.
1. Repair or replace linkage parts as
needed.
2. Park Sprag Sticking. 2. Replace overdrive annulus gear.
3. Rear Band Mis-adjusted/Worn. 3. Adjust band; replace.
4. Valve Body Malfunction. 4. Remove and service valve body. Replace
valve body if any valves or valve bores are
worn or damaged.
5. Rear Servo Malfunction. 5. Remove and disassemble transmission.
Replace worn/damaged servo parts as
necessary.
6. Direct Clutch in Overdrive Worn. 6. Disassemble overdrive. Replace worn or
damaged parts.
7. Front Clutch Burnt. 7. Remove and disassemble transmission.
Replace worn, damaged clutch parts as
required.

How's your fluid level? My truck did this when I was low on fluid because it was leaking out of the TC. Since the leak has been fixed and it's full I haven't had one issue. Strange thing is that only reverse seemed to be affected by it, Drive worked fine.

Thanks HeyYou, that definitely makes sence, and a sticky caliper has never crossed my mind. But ill define exactly whats happening. I have a fairly long drive-way, and when i crank my truck ill let it warm up a few mins. Get the juices flowing. And ill shift to reverse rev it up until i begin rolling backwards, and after maybe 4 or 5 seconds of backing up it just softly falls int a neutral like gear. It falls out of reverse pretty un noticebly. Once this happens I stop and pat the throttle until it jerks or jumps back into gear. When it does go back into gear its definitely a pretty rough jerk. (like reving up to around 2500rpm in neutral and dropping into reverse) And yes this only happens in reverse.

Check your fluid level. (have to check in neutral.) Make sure that is up to snuff. If it is, doing a fluid/filter change, and a band adjustment may not be such a bad idea. If you aren't comfortable doing all that yourself, probably isn't real hideously expensive to have a shop do it. (under 200??) Hopefully, they won't find anything 'interesting' in the pan.....
