Default Emergency Help Please

A friend of mine bought a used hypertech max energy programmer and tried using it on his truck but it seems that it has been used before and the previous owner didnt tune back to stock. The truck is a 99 ram with 5.2 magnum. When trying to use the programmer it said it was returning back to stock settings but then said the connection was interrupted and said to disconnect. While trying to program, the dash said "no bus" where the miles would be. It will crank over but wont start. What to do? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

try and plug it in again. se if you can get it to plug in non interupted and let it run through the programing. otherwise see if you can get a hold of the previous owner.

you may have to call hypertech, tell them the whole story, and ask them for help.

its fairly common for a used, VIN locked hypertech programmer to change hands, however, the programmer is supposed to refuse to program. it should not "return to stock" since the new VIN is not the same as the LOCKED VIN which is stored in the programmer.

worst case is that you might have to remove your pcm and send it to hypertech or a refurb shop, or heaven forbid, the dealer, and have it reflashed.

The only way for this to happen is:
When you restart a interupted programmer it will display: "Programming Interupted, Press Yes To Continue?" ** If you select Yes the unit will try and complete the process and has no way of knowing you are on a different vehicle. The end result will likely be a partially programmed ECM.

In your case it sounds like you are the 3rd or 4th vehicle and it went into default mode returning to stock (of the previous vehicle) when you selected yes to continue.

only way to fix it is to take it to the STEALERSHIP. itll probably cost you around $300 for a pcm reflash.

very common problem with ANY used tuner... even the HIGHLY acclaimed SCT

Well i towed his truck to the stealership and they say it needs a new pcm. They want $780 which he is NOT going to do. I suggested just buying a reman pcm. Is this place any good?

I have seen a couple other sites but they seem to have a lot of bad reviews.

try to find a 99 ram 5.2 PCM from a bone yard. Make sure it has the same trans configutarion and came from a truck that has the same security group. (like alarm, power windows and locks, etc.)

If we did that then would it just need to be programmed to the VIN and mileage of his truck? Would it run to get it somewhere?
