Default 46re 4x4 ver 2x4

Ok so I have a 46re in my 96 2500 4x4 5.9 I found a 46re in a 96 1500 2x4 5.9 for $60 plus tax. I know the tail shafts are different between 2wd and 4wd. My question is this. Since the tail shaft is in the overdrive unit couldn't I just swap the overdrives and go? Or do I need to tear it down and remove and replace the tail shaft?

Ok, disclaimer first: I am NOT a transmission expert. By any stretch of the imagination.

That said..... The overdrive units will be different between two, and four wheel drive. According to popular theory, you should be able to take a 4x4 overdrive unit, put it on the back of any 46RE (probably with year range restrictions....) and be good to go.

My suggestion would be to call someplace like WITTrans, and just ask 'em if that would work though.......

Here's from a post Martin Saine made on another forum...

OD units from all 96-03 46RE's will interchange (2WD to 2WD and 4WD to 4WD).

If I'm reading that right...2WD won't interchange with a 4WD.
