I've had two sets of black ones on various trucks. A set of Bully's I had started rusting in spots after about a year and a half. They lost a step pad on the interstate at two years.
My second Gen truck had a set of Westin black nerfs. I had the truck a little over four years and 68k miles. Even with a ding or two here and there, they never showed any rust and I never had a problem with them.

I've also had a "no-name" set of chrome nerfs that pitted to hell in no time. My current stainless Westins have been flawless for almost six years now.

No matter which type you decide on, remember, you get what you pay for...

BLACK BABY!! black is the new chrome.. trending shows that black is much more popular among modern car and truck builders these days.. "blacked out" or "****ed out" is currently very popular...

My Westins have been on my truck since before I got it something like 5 or 6 years ago and I've introduced them to the ground a few times and they're still in good shape. I think the only rust is on the bolts on the support straps.

Another vote for black. You want the nerf bars to compliment the look of your truck and not stand out like a sore thumb.
You can always powder coat them any color you'd like.
I have the chrome & black scheme so I went with chrome but black would have looked good as well since my truck is black..

I would probably stay with black, especially if they end up being used as rock rails. Why crunch an expensive set of stainless ones?
