Default Headlight switch tried to melt.

My headlight switch tried to melt on me last night. I started smelling melted plastic and I had read storries about these switched causing fires. So I imieiatly pulled over and pulled my dash cover off and pulled the switch out and sure enough there was a big whole melted on the pluggin side actually. It seemed to want to get hot even with the lights off but it doesnt get hot when the switch is unplugged. Is it the switch causing the problem or the or the plugging. I over exaggereted the melting, the pluggin is still ussable as far as I can tell from inspection.

If I need to replace the switch should I get one from a salvage yard or is there an aftermarket company that make a better one.

Ever since I read that story about a pick-up burned up from that switch, I carry a fire extiguisher. So atleast I wouldn't have lost my truck.

Replace the switch with a new one, not junk yard.

I dont think the Mopar ones are that expensive either.

If you would like to keep this from happening again, do the relay mod for your headlights (in the DIY Links thread in the FAQ section), and drill a 1/2'' hole in the vent tube that goes right next to your headlight switch.

I just finished reading a recall link on the 94-97 rams over on cummins forum. They said that the ones with towing package already had everything the recall adds to prevent this. But it does say that all accesory lights need to be wired through a relay so I am thinking thats what cause the problem and I will be getting a relay picked up.

Anyone have a wiring diagram for properly wiring the relay?

The particular recall I read was only for 94-97 rams. So unless you find something that says otherwise I would say yes.
