The reason why it took three changes until the oil wasn't as black was due to having left over oil from the initial change over. I think that's what happened there. Once all the detergents were displaced, no cleaning takes place after that and, the oil looks much cleaner and, it is cleaner as it's not cleaning the motor parts like an oil containing detergents does.
