Default Problem with variable speed and high speed wipers

Good day all!

Have a 1998 Ram 1500 Quad Cab V8 5.9L. Has been a solid truck since I bought her a year and a half ago, but I have now just developed a problem out of the clear blue.

Without warning the variable speed and high speed wipers stopped working. All of the other features work, including directional, hazards, w/s washer and low speed wipers. I checked everything I could think of over and learned that if I hold "pressure" on multi-function lever (in other words, I pull the lever towards me), the variable speed wipers work. If I lift the lever up (as if the right directional is on) and maintain that same pressure, the high speed wiper work. As soon as I release pressure in either case the functions cease.

My question is this: Do I assume (something I hate to do) that I must replace the multi-function lever automatically and expect this will resolve the problem, or could it be something like "dirty contacts," condensation, or any one of another problem. According to a friend of mine there seems to quite a bit of problems with the wiper systems on these trucks and no readily diagnosable problem; only varied "conjecture."

If anyone has any firsthand knowledge of this particular wiper problem I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks,
Doc.....

I don't want to spend your money, but I'd go with a new MF switch.
