Transmission gone?
Hello everyone,
I have a 1999 dodge ram 5.9L v8 quad cab automatic. I've had it for about a year and its been a pretty good truck. The truck has 147K on it right now.
Problem is, last night I left a party trying to get in between a 6 foot ditch covered in snow and 2 more trucks in the driveway. When I attempted to squeeze through the trucks and the ditch.....the ditch sucked me right in. My passenger side was sunk into a ditch...Literally....like the driver side door was pointing straight up to the sky. I tried putting it in 4wd and tried rocking back and forth for like 45 minutes in the -25degree weather. It didnt work, so I had one of my buddies come pull me out. This morning when I tried to put my truck into reverse, I couldn't go anywhere. I ran it for an hour then drove for 30 minutes. I have plenty of fluid, and I dont think its frozen. When I tried putting it in reverse it sounded like neutral.
Did I blow my reverse out? Should I try doing a tranny flush? Rebuilt tranny?
-Help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

If trans shifts normally fine and has no reverse at all it is internal......try this, place gear selector in manual 2 gear and increase speed to 15-20 MPH and then place gear selector in manual low,Does vehicle have the geardown effect?...If not which I suspect ,then we know the reverse band is not applying.....Although the band is not replaceable in the vehicle, it can be verified by removing the oil pan and taking a look..

if it has manual low gear down effect it is likely that the direct clutch set in the OD housing failed, even though it is applied going forward all it does is take the load off the OD one way clutch, so it would still go forward, but reverse would not be there...

That all depends, but the reverse band is basically the last component removed from transmission case, so it would be time in my opinion to just freshen up the unit....Its likely that this event finished off a problem that was to come soon enough....However if tranny is clean inside, the direct clutch set can be replaced by removing the OD housing on rear of tranny...actually the tmain trans case would not have to be removed from truck....
