it really depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. can bet you are looking at crank, $400?, lifters-cam $300?, gaskets, oil pump, bearings etc $400 and good chance your heads are cracked-$500. am sure you can do the math. but if you have the time, skill and money you can do better than some one making a buck puting crate motors together. not dissen crates just sayin.

id personally do it myself, BUT i would ofcourse have a reputable shop do ALL machine work as well as blueprint the engine. when it gets to you its just nuts and bolts

as far as cost goes... thats entirely up to you

well, a rebuild kit is 1300, with rods and pistons.. 900ish without rods ro soemthin like that.. but that is all up to you, cause i would trust myself and a reputable machine shop to do my work.. then i know its right..

rods can be resized without issue. crank can be reground as well. buy everything else new

EDIT: i forgot we're dealing with a knocking engine... rods and crank should be closely inspected, if you spun a bearing expect to use oversized bearings to accomodate undersized journals

well guys i got the motor tore apart yesterday and boy did it open a can of worms. what sounded like a rod knock to me my dad and my dads mechinc was really pistons 1 and 3 draging groves in the block and piston. so it looks like a whole lot of money i dont have to invest in it.

It looks like someone barbecued a pig in there. Best bet's a long block, I think, chucking the old one onto the scrap heap. An overbore of .030 would probably fix it right up, but you'll not be saving any money over some random reman.

If the transmission is good the money you'll spend on a reman engine will net you a lot more vehicle than the same money would buy. If the transmission is shot you're breaking even at best.

On the other hand, if you're like me then the cost of putting the old Ram back on the road is compared to how much it would cost to get the same miles on the road in a similar vehicle, and that usually tilts things in favor of the chassis you've already got.
