Default Part swapping

I have two trucks both 99's The 2500 has no tach and 1500 does. what would be the chances of just swapping them as for the 2500 is a stick and the 1500 is an automatic. I'm building the 2500 and it is the plainest of jane package. Both have the led read out in the lower right side only in the automatic thats the "prnd12" section. The one in the 2500 stays black even though the part is there.

I can't tell you for sure whether it will work or not. Best thing is to try it, it is only a few screws. I will tell you before hand that sometimes pcms are picky on the clusters (silver dodge had an issue I believe a long time ago. You might see "no bus" with a cluster it does not like).

Mileage is stored in the cluster, I think. Don't know if the cluster "knows" its vin number, and the computer gets annoyed when it sees one that doesn't match. Although, the dealer has to have a way to swap 'em out...... in the event of failure. Might wanna look thru the 01 service manual, and see if there are any nuggets of wisdom there.

Only thing I can add is... Yes, mileage is stored in the cluster. It is recorded in the pcm also but the cluster does not reference this number, it is basically for record keeping. Even for PA emissions, you still manually enter the mileage off the odometer in the computer, it doesn't pull it over the obd2 connection at my testing station. ymmv lol

I still say swap it to try it. It will honestly take you 15 minutes taking your time to check. Pop the bezel's. 7 screws on the auto (pull the bottom panel to disconnect the indicator wire), 4 screws on the manual. Push the auto cluster in the manual cluster spot and you'll have your answer. Like HeyYou said, the dealer has to have a way to reprogram so if it doesn't not work, swap them back and see if you can talk to a tech to see what he can do.

i swapped my no tach cluster out of my 99 ram with a tach cluster from a 00 durango, and everything worked, except highbeam light was always on, so i just pulled the bulb from the cluster. also my 4x4 light now says part-time 4wd
but the milage stays with the cluster, i had 110k miles now it says i have 160k, but i still have th factory cluster if i ever decide to sell my truck
