I know its funny, Ive owned a brand new 05 Dodge ram cummins a few years ago but never did any work on it since it was all under warranty and now I got this 01 ram and never really worked on trucks.... is this the transfer case fluid change an easy one like a engine oil change when I just drain the plug and refill? Not like the diffs when I need to take the pan out, replace gasket... etc? Also, what transfer case fluid should I use and how much of it? Any additives?

Two plugs. Drain and re-fill with ATF+4. Capacitys are in the FAQ section.

its a simple drain and refill.

a haynes manual would be a good investment

the NV231D transfer case requires 2.5 pts of dexron III or ATF+4. preferably ATF+4

I have a shine in my 4x4. I had the TC replaced (Under warranty) a year ago inthe springtime. i have used it for only about 3 total miles since the new one was installed.

If you don' use your 4x4 very often, then there is not much wear on the gears there. With fresh gears, you get some noise.

If it was really bad, you would feel a vibration through the gas pedal when not in 4x4. I had that and noticed that my Transfer case was bone dry. they like to leak, and if you have skid plates, you will never see the drips. I noticed the leak ebcause i was changing the tranny fluid and filter. So i brought it in. The case was cracked. The crack happened after I brought it from CA to Arkansas and the arkansas winter got MUCH colder than the SF Bay Area weather it was used to.

Try a fluid change and see what happens. Should actually help it.

Take out the top plug first...... once you have that one out, work on the bottom plug.

UPDATE, on the stall. I started my truck this morning after the blizzard and truck BARELY ran, it was misfiring bad, I check the codes and I have CYL 5, 7, 8 misfire. I open the hood and the motor and everything was completely covered with snow, I checked the wires and dried them off, i let it idle and drove it around for about 15 min and it got a little better but still a misfire, what got wet? Distributor? Coil? Its definitely the snow that messed it up, any ideas? TIA

if you had snow eveywhere you got water in your dist cap and coil get you some wd40 til you can do a tune up but it sounds like its time for cap, rotor, might as well do plugs and wires and coil while your doing it

Probably moisture in your cap, or your wires are arcing like crazy.
