Quick trip back to Square 1: Engine oil loss, smell of oil burning, oil in exhaust?
I was certain I had a shot plenum seal.
Then I started thinking I might also have a shot valve cover gasket
Then my project turned into replacing everything (water pump, timing chain, valve seals, plenum seals, all other related seals)
Now I had to drive it a little bit and so I filed it up with oil, cleaned out the engine bay, dug a little deeper before I started, and now I feel like I'm back to square one. Maybe the plenums fine? Maybe the real problem is a headgasket or something???
Symptoms/issues:
oil is going like all-get-out, but no leaks
very slight oil smell in exhaust.
Oil residue below passenger side exhaust pipe
Oilish smell in cockpit if I run any air. Makes it unbearable in there after a while.
strong oil smell in engine bay
Poor gas mileage
The engine RUNS perfectly. Without the smell situation, you'd think the engine is new
What I've been told:
Headgasket would mean the engine wouldnt be running as well/coolant would be disappearing
PLenum would not leave an oil smell in engine bay
Any insights? I hate to spend a few hundred bucks (I hire an automotive tech to help me at $30/hr) and an entire weekend just to find out I'm replacing the wrong stuff.
I'm thinking its a combo valve cover gasket/plenum?
126k miles

your piston rings are bad my is doing the same thing 1995 1500 ram 3.9magnum start looking for a new motor or spend 500.00 plus the cost to pull motor and put it back in on rebuilding the bottom end .
i just put a fresh oil change filter and drove 3oo miles looked down at the guages and my oil light was on with no oil pressure no leaks anywhere my mechanic is a family member who works in a garage looked at mine for free
