Default 2003 Ram transmission problems (it has the 2nd gen setup)

A friend of mine has an 03 Ram quad cab 4X4 with the 5.9L, auto. trans. 170K on her. Deal is DRIVE is out on it. it works in 1st and 2nd and also reverse.

I do know these transmissions were the worst of the worst for Dodge. I ve been down the road of a bad transmission once out of 8 trucks.

Im looking for any ideas on what it may be before I stell him to go to a transmission shop and shell out $2200

thanks all

These tranny's are notorious for being temperamental to say the least with the valve bodies creating most of the harm done the electronic solenoids do not fair them much better either. drive is out most likely because of a broken accumulator spring, an easy suggestion, get a shift kit from your preferred vendor of choice which will supply all the needed parts to repair the issue in question. It certainly would not hurt to check the solenoid for proper operation either.

Chrysler's thought was to increase fuel economy using the existing set-up they have been using for the last 30 years, keeping in mind you would be surprised to know that most A518's are nothing more than a overdriven torqueflite, with the addition of electronic solenoids to control lockup. it wasnt until Chrysler introduced the benz tranny's into their trucks that most problematic issues went away. the A518 which is what I have in my truck is very reliable along with service should serve you well.
