Flexplate P/N?
How can I tell what p/n my flexplate is? I'm going to replace it this weekend and I wanted to have a new one ready, rather then ordering it and waiting for the next weekend.
I have the service manual but can't find a p/n.
1998 Ram 2500 4WD, 5.9L, 46RE
It's the 8800lb. GVW, not the 6600lb. if that makes a difference?
Autozone says it's Chrysler p/n 53008669?
Thanks

Why are you replacing it especially with a new one? That will be pricy. Is it cracked or bent?
It should not matter on GVWR. You need a 5.9L flexplate with the external balance weight attached. Should be model year 96+.

Thanks, the listing at Autozone said it was for a 5.9L.
The reason is because the torque conveter bolts starting rubbing the dust shield a few months ago. Initially it was only when I let off the gas, and only for a second or so. Then it would happen when I was idling in gear, but not in nuetral, now it's pretty much all the time. It took me awhile to figure out what it was.
The torque converter bolts are tight, they haven't backed out.
Autozone lists that at under $100.

Or do you mean the bolt holes are elongated?
You should check at junkyards. I bet it would still be cheaper.
Is this the one you are talking about?

This one should work. You should call and make sure that this has the crank sensor holes.

Thanks, I think that the Autozone website is wrong.
We looked at the dust shield from the edge (longways) and it's not bent, also there were no marks from it being hit.
Maybe I'll wait to buy anything until I have it out and in my hands. I would still rather have a new one if I'm going to go through all the effort to change it.
Thanks for your help!
So the bolts are tight and it is still hitting the shield? If yes it may be that the dust shield is bent in. I would think there would be a wicked vibration and other issues (damage to tranny pump) if the flexplate was bent enough to strike the dust shield with tight bolts. I may also be confused at what is going on or I may be wrong (it happens from time to time
).

I've seen this problem before, though not on a Dodge. A cracked flex plate will distort under load and cause that noise when the converter moves forward toward the block. It'll also chew up the transmission's front pump if you let it go for very long at all.
Maybe try running the truck with no dust shield on. You may be able to see what is happening. Could something have gotten into the bellhousing that is bouncing around? What do you think the flexplate is hitting if the dust shield has no marks? I just don't want to see you drop the tranny and it ended up not being necessary.
The cover has marks on the inside where the bolts from the torque converter are rubbing it.
