I put gas magnums on our 1986 1500 4X4 and it rode very stiff - my Brother said it felt like I used wood blocks instead of shocks!
I put sensatracs on our 1994 2500 4X4 and they rode very nice. Also put sensatracs on our 1993 Jeep ZJ 4X4 and really liked them.

I've had sensa-trac's on my 99 2wd for the past 5 yrs and like them.. I would go with the Gas-matics or the sensa-trac's or you can look into a set of KYB's supposedly there a good shock also since your looking in that price range.
