Default exhaust help needed!!!

I see that alot of you guys say to get rid of the cats and trick the o2 sensors, I have been told this will absolutley my kill gas milage, is this true?
Also I was looking for ways to set up a true dual exhaust system that exits before the rear tires that misses the gas tank and drive shaft. Has anyone done this or have any ideas about how I should ?
Thank You

the o2 sensor simulators didn't seem to effect my gas mileage, my exhaust is true duals but i kept them on the passenger side and dumped it before the rear axle but if you wanted to have them exit out the side it is possible you just have to cros under the frame before the tank. i was planning on doing that with mine but i chickened out because i was afraid of a rock smashing the pipe.
